Breast reconstruction revision is a surgical procedure to correct earlier breast reconstruction surgery results. If you are unhappy with the results of your breast reconstruction after a mastectomy or lumpectomy, revision surgery could help remove excessive scarring for breasts that are more even, natural, and shapely in appearance.

Are you unhappy with the outcome of your breast reconstruction?

After a lumpectomy or a mastectomy, breast reconstruction surgery can help restore the look and feel of one or both breasts. But what if your results aren’t what you were hoping for? You may find that your new reconstructed breast(s) feel unnatural, uneven, or asymmetric.  You may also find that your new reconstructed breast(s) feel too large or too small, or one is higher or lower than the other. Revision surgery at Andres Plastic Surgery in Scottsdale can help you achieve the symmetric and natural look and feel that you hoped to accomplish with your original reconstruction surgery.

Fully customized to suit your unique needs and goals

Breast reconstruction revision surgery is a highly specialized procedure requiring exceptional skill and expertise from the surgeon. No two breasts are the same, and choosing a surgeon who profoundly understands the techniques used in breast reconstruction and reconstruction revision surgery is crucial. Revision surgery is always fully customized to your unique circumstances.

You may be interested in breast reconstruction revision surgery if:

  • You are dissatisfied with the results of your reconstruction surgery.
  • You had to have your breast implants removed due to complications or infection.
  • You have noticed changes over time and wish to restore the initial results of your reconstruction surgery.
  • Your breasts have become uneven or asymmetrical.
  • You are experiencing complications with your implants, such as displacement, capsular contracture (tightening of the scar tissue around a breast implant), or implant rupture.
  • You wish to discuss implant-based or flap-based salvage procedures or revisions further.

How long does the surgery take?

Breast revision surgery is typically performed as an outpatient surgery. Depending on the details of your surgery, it will approximately take between 2 to 8 hours, depending upon the procedure(s) necessary.  Breast reconstruction revision surgery can be combined with other procedures, such as a breast lift, in which case your time in surgery will be longer.  Often, other cosmetic procedures of the face or body may be combined with this procedure.  While the surgery can be performed with intravenous sedation, general anesthesia is the more common choice. Once your anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. Andres will perform the surgery as planned, taking care to minimize scarring as much as possible.

How long is the recovery time?

You should plan to have a friend or relative drive you home after the surgery is completed. At first, your results will be obscured by swelling. Dr. Andres will provide detailed instructions to help facilitate the healing process.

Healing time varies from person to person, but it usually takes about six weeks for the swelling to go down entirely and for your breasts to start feeling natural again. You should plan to stay home from work for the first week or two after surgery and avoid exerting yourself for another week or two after that.
