About the procedure
Your Phoenix breast reconstruction surgery may be performed at the same time as your mastectomy or at a later date. This is decided on a case-by-case basis, depending upon the patient’s individual candidacy. There are a myriad of breast reconstruction methods. Listed below are a few that Dr. Andres employs:
- Tissue expander/implant reconstruction – This technique uses a balloon-like expander. The tissue expander is meticulously positioned behind the chest muscle, and then gradually filled with saline over a period of several weeks. By doing so, this gradually expands the skin and soft tissue, to make room for and be replaced by a breast implant.
- Direct-to-implant reconstruction – This technique is a single-stage reconstruction procedure in which a breast implant is immediately inserted, without utilizing tissue expanders.
- Flap-based reconstruction – For a flap-based reconstruction, tissue is transferred, along with its blood supply, from one area of the patient’s body, such as one’s flanks or abdomen, to the desired breast area, so as to recreate a natural looking breast. This particular approach has the benefit of bringing healthy tissue and blood flow to the damaged areas. There are a variety of methods that can be used for flap-based reconstructive procedures.
The best way to determine which method of reconstruction is right for you, is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Andres, so that he may be able to examine your body, and discern the best course of action, based on his professional opinion. As a peer-acclaimed guru in reconstructive procedures, Dr. Andres delivers some of the best breast reconstruction Phoenix has to provide.

During recovery
Dr. Andres may find it necessary for both a Phoenix & Scottsdale breast reconstruction patient to spend a few days in the hospital after surgery. Recovery time is dependant on numerous factors, such as whether or not the procedure is performed immediately following your mastectomy or if it was performed at a later date.
In addition, whether an implant was used or the patient’s own tissue will play a role in how long the downtime for recovery will be. Patients who choose flap reconstruction will typically have a longer span of recovery, as they will have two surgical sites--the new breast along with the donor site. Patients who choose implant-based reconstruction can expect somewhere between 2 to 3 weeks of recovery. Patients recovering from flap-based reconstruction can expect downtime that extends closer to 6-8 weeks long.
As with any type of breast reconstruction procedure, the patient may elect to have the nipples and areola reconstructed. This procedure may be done within a few months following your last breast reconstructive procedure.
