About the procedure

There are a number of techniques that can be applied toward a breast reconstruction after a mastectomy. Listed below, are a few methods Dr. Andres can use for breast reconstruction:

Breast implants

Using tissue expanders, Dr. Andres will be able to gradually stretch the skin and tissue from the area in which the patient underwent a mastectomy. From there, Dr. Andres will be able to insert and position a breast implant. This implant may be either a saline or silicone implant, based on the patient’s preference and Dr. Andres’ recommendation. Utilizing the direct-to-implant technique as a single surgery following mastectomy is a novel technique honed by Dr. Andres and may be an option for some women.

DIEP free flap reconstruction

This complex, microsurgical procedure harvests your own tissue from the abdomen, much like the tissue removed during a tummy tuck, to fill and recreate the appearance of natural breasts, without the use of implants.

Latissimus dorsi flap reconstruction

This procedure takes muscle, fat, tissue and blood supply from the area of the patient’s upper back, and uses it to reconstruct the breast shape. Utilizing this flap with an implant takes advantage of the vascularity and added tissue of a flap along with the fullness and shape of an implant. Again, as the nature of this procedure calls for two surgical sites, the downtime will be longer than that of one pursuing breast implants.

Gluteal and thigh free flap reconstruction

This is a relatively newer form of breast reconstruction surgery. With this method, tissue from the buttocks and/or thigh is harvested microsurgically and used to restore breast shape and form. This is potentially a viable option for women who do not have ample abdominal tissue or have had abdominal procedures that would not make them candidates for a DIEP flap. This procedure has two surgical sites, and therefore will require a longer period of recovery.
