What is breast reduction?

Dr. Andres can alleviate many of the physical, emotional, and social constraints experienced by women with larger breasts with a breast reduction in the Phoenix & Scottsdale areas. From back and neck pain to reduced mobility, issues related to larger breasts can have severe implications on quality of life. Fortunately, Dr. Andres can offer women relief and freedom from their physical burdens in this situation. With his help, they can reclaim their lives and go on to enjoy activities like jogging, athletic activities, horseback riding, or dancing without holding themselves back due to breast size or discomfort.  Social stigmas are often ameliorated as well as have a great impact on emotional issues.

Who is a good candidate for breast reduction surgery?

Women with disproportionate breast size caused by weight gain, pregnancy, or genetics are prime candidates for breast reduction surgery. The following factors may affect your candidacy:

  • Medical history
  • Existing health conditions
  • Age
  • Lifestyle habits, such as smoking
  • Breast health

If you feel that you meet these requirements and would like to improve the proportion of your breasts to the rest of your body, breast reduction surgery may be a viable option.

About the breast reduction procedure

Regarding breast reduction surgery in Scottsdale, Dr. Andres is the go-to expert. His routine procedure typically involves an outpatient visit, with IV sedation or general anesthesia carefully administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist.

Depending on the extent of reduction desired, Dr. Andres will determine the ideal surgical technique and begin.

He will remove excess fat, tissue, and skin from the breasts through incisions, then reshape them and the areolas for a more natural look and feel.  Lifting of the breast along with the reduction of the breast tissue will combine to create a smaller, more youthful, and rejuvenated appearance of the breasts.  With Dr. Andres' expertise, women can achieve excellent results on a procedure shown to have one of the highest patient satisfaction rates.

What to expect during your recovery

Following your breast reduction surgery, you will be allowed to return home. You will be given a surgical bra to wear. This bra will keep your newly reshaped breasts in the best position for their healing process. You must always wear this bra, for the first 4 to 6 weeks, except for showering or bathing. You may experience some bruising and swelling, but this is normal.

Generally, patients feel ready to return to their daily routines after approximately two weeks. You can resume strenuous activities or high-impact exercise approximately four to six weeks after surgery. You’ll find that most of the swelling will diminish within a month or so. Dr. Andres offers one of the best breast reduction Phoenix/Scottsdale has to offer. Results take six months to a year to take full effect, but patients can be sure of expert and safe care from an experienced breast surgeon.  Patients often feel immediate relief just after the procedure is performed.

Types of Breast Reductions

Dr. Andres can use a few different methods of breast reduction depending on the amount of reduction required to achieve the ideal breast size and shape for your body. These options range from minimally invasive liposuction to surgically removing excess skin and breast tissue. Dr. Lewis Albert Andres, our board-certified plastic surgeon, will discuss the best option for you based on the size and shape of your breasts and what will be required to achieve the size and shape that you envision.

The vertical breast reduction or “lollipop”

The "lollipop" technique is effective when more significant amounts of tissue need to be removed in a breast reduction procedure. This incision shape encircles the areola with a vertical line extending down the front of the breast towards the breast crease. The result leaves the patient with raised nipples, a more youthful-looking breast shape and size, and scarring that is barely visible and concealed when wearing revealing tops such as bras or bikinis.

The inverted “T” breast reduction, or “anchor”

A combined "lollipop" and crease incision — often called an anchor or upside-down “T” — is chosen for those requiring a more significant breast reduction. This incision pattern allows for greater amounts of breast tissue to be removed and reshaped, with the bonus that scars are thoughtfully placed to ensure minimal visibility when wearing revealing clothes.  This pattern is often used for women with larger breasts or significant drooping of the breasts.

Liposuction

For specific breast shapes, liposuction may be all that is required to achieve your goal of smaller breasts.

This is case-specific and is used when the skin is in good condition and there is primarily fatty tissue to be removed.

This treatment is typically appropriate for a less extensive reduction in size.

SPAIR

With the SPAIR (Short Scar PeriAreolar Inferior Pedicle Reduction) breast reduction, tissue is removed from around the nipple and the areola in a semi-circular fashion.  The breast is then reshaped in a manner that maintains the natural curves throughout the entire breast, ultimately creating an appropriate and pleasing projection of the breast with a result that holds up longer over time, has shorter scarring than usual, and has a faster recovery. Dr. Andres trained under and learned from renowned breast surgeon Dr. Dennis Hammond, inventor of the SPAIR technique.

Testimonials

Aside from the fact that he's a brilliant surgeon...he's a caring man. Stage 2b breast cancer brought me to his office Sept. 2016, referred by Dr. Lise Walker. Every time I made a decision as to how I wanted to proceed...more cancer was found, and it changed everything. I wanted a reduction, first and foremost...I was already much too big. I figured, if I HAVE to be a cCancer patient, I'm going to take advantage of the positive aspects of it. I started with a tissue expander to size the left side, then scheduled the reconstruction April 2017 for my implant on my left and reduction on my right. I was never looking for perfection...all I wanted was 2 breasts that fit into the same size bra, and looked good.

He and his staff kept me well-informed every step of the way...Although, I was calling the office ALL the time...probably drove them crazy!! I know I'm not the easiest patient, but this all seemed so ominous to me. He did as I asked...as natural as possible, without being off work for too long, and a reduction. I'd gladly recommend him to anyone in need of his expertise. Thank you, Dr. Andres, for everything.

I had an amazing experience since my first meeting with him. He was sincere, knowledgeable, and caring. He listened throughout, unlike other doctors I saw. He was confident and demonstrated a true dedication to his profession, which put me at ease. The result was more than I had asked for. I am so happy. His staff is wonderful and could count on any of them throughout my time there. Highest praises! Thank you!

Will my insurance pay for my breast reduction surgery?

On some occasions, insurance coverage may be deemed necessary and will be discussed at your consultation. During your consultation, our staff will thoroughly explain what payment and finance options are available to you. We often do not perform breast reduction surgery under insurance.

What health conditions improve as a result of breast reduction surgery?

The most significant contributing factor to a woman's choice to have breast reduction surgery is neck and back pain, shoulder pain due to grooves from bra straps, or rashes on the undersides of your breasts and adjacent abdominal tissue.

You should see an improvement in these conditions because of your breast reduction surgery. Oftentimes after a breast reduction surgery, women are more able to participate in physical activities and have the confidence and ability to do so afterwards. The health benefits from this increased physical activity has had a great impact on quality of life and significantly improved health conditions. Furthermore, you can significantly improve mental health issues such as low self-esteem because of a more balanced body profile.

Should I consider a breast lift as part of my breast reduction surgery?

As we age, the elasticity of our skin will begin to decline. If you are a young woman seeking breast reduction surgery, breast surgery may deliver the results you desire. However, if you are a bit older or have breastfed children, you may find that your new breasts might need an additional boost. An added benefit of breast reduction is the inherent lifting of the breasts and nipple during the procedure to create a more youthful appearance. What is the recovery from breast reduction surgery?

Most patients will experience soreness and discomfort immediately following your breast reduction surgery. You must take at least one week away from routine activities such as work, although some people will find an additional week helpful. Your breasts will likely be swollen and tender during this time.

When is my follow-up visit with Dr. Andres?

You will visit the office a few days after surgery, at one week postop, and a few visits over the next several months thereafter. You will need to refrain from strenuous activity for one month following your surgery, so your breast tissue has an opportunity to heal correctly. You should expect to feel tired during this initial recovery period. This is entirely normal and will subside as your body heals.

Once you've decided to have breast reduction surgery, you have begun the journey toward having the body you have longed to have. We are here to help you feel the self-confidence that comes with a pleasing figure, free from overly large breasts and the problems that they may bring.
